The malicious hack on Sony’s Playstation network in April 2011 forced the company to bring the platform offline for more than 100 million registered users for almost a month (23 days). The outage cost Sony approximately $171 million.

Personal details of thousands of users were posted online by hackers, and the Sony brand suffered hugely as a result. Security contractors were hired to investigate the incident and rebuild the network with improved security measures in place.
